UKULELE LESSONS FOR CHILDREN

For in-home students we recommend ukulele lessons for ages 6 and up.  Many young  students switch to the guitar after gaining the basics on the ukulele. If you have a young child who wants to learn the guitar, we often recommend starting with ukulele lessons first. The ukulele and guitar are played in a similar way, but are simply tuned differently. The ukulele has four strings and is smaller than the guitar which makes it easier on little hands.  It also makes the transition smoother if they choose to switch to guitar.

GET THE MOST FROM YOUR UKULELE LESSONS

You’re ready to sign up for ukulele lessons and you really want to make the most them. Here at Brampton School of Music we have learned quite a bit about how to make the most of your ukulele lessons. Here are just a few:
TAKE A COMBINED APPROACH TO LEARNING THE UKULELE
Ukulele teachers often have specific songs and techniques they focus on with beginners. These are ukulele fundamentals and are important to help students develop good technique and habits. Although each teacher has their own unique style most will use a popular ukulele method book in their lessons. This is to make sure that you don’t miss out on anything important. In addition to the method book your teacher will ask you to choose your favourite ukulele songs to learn in your lessons. This combined approach to learning will inspire you to play songs that you love while at the same time developing good ukulele technique.
USE A RECOGNIZED UKULELE METHOD FOR BEGINNERS
Ukulele teachers will often use specific songs with beginner students. These songs help develop good ukulele techniques and habits, and are fun to play. In addition to these songs beginner students should use a recognized ukulele method book. This will help make sure that you don’t miss out on important lesson concepts when you’re first starting out. Our ukulele teachers often use the Hal Leonard ukulele Method In addition teaching your favorite songs in your lessons.
TRY TO PLAY THE UKULELE EVERYDAY
It’s great to show up for your ukulele lessons every week but what about all that time in between your lessons? The real magic is in having a practice schedule. You should try to play every day for at least a few minutes. It has been proven that we develop skills over time with consistency. 15-20 minutes playing the ukulele every day will give you better results than cramming in 2 hours of practice the day before your ukulele lesson. It’s not always possible to play every single day so don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t. You should however try for daily practice. This will make your ukulele lessons more fun and even make your teacher happy!
SET GOALS IN YOUR UKULELE LESSONS
Learning how to set goals is a very important part of succeeding in any activity. It's a habit that almost every successful musician has developed. If you really want to get good at the ukulele you should start by challenging yourself to reach regular milestones. For example: Your first week you can try to play two new ukulele chords smoothly. Week number two might be a certain song played through from beginning to end. There are so many different goals you can set. The important thing is to start with one small goal and build on that. At Brampton School of Music we have several programs designed to help you or your children set and achieve musical goals in your ukulele lessons. There are at least two optional recitals every year, our exclusive Musical Ladder System, and our 150 day practice challenge program.
